*  Volleyball open Gym for Thursday August 1st has been cancelled.

Before

Mrs. Arnott approached us this summer and we responded to the request. She has a concern that the school erosion problems, if not addressed soon, might become a big problem on their playground, where the school just installed some new equipment for the students to play on.

As you can see in the before pictures, the soil kept losing its cover. When a big rain storm occurred all the soil washed out, creating a muddy mess and big holes that could be potential hazards for students. It is challenging to fix this erosion problem completely because of the soil type and slope. The steep slope is hard to keep soil stable and the clay sheds the water causing the soil to wash away, discouraging seed growth. There are several options, but due to lack of time before school starts and low funding (also a challenge as many of you already know) we came up with some small fixes that hopefully will help.

After

Mrs. Arnott and her students thought it was best to mix some peat soil in with the existing soil, and then add some grass seed. We agreed that once the grass is established it will act as a filter and slow down the rain and its velocity. The maintenance crew will have to push mow; no big tractors should be driving on that slope because the weight of the tractor and the cutter are contributing to part of the slipping.

Since our office wasn’t sure of the underground utilities we didn’t want to suggest any digging at this point. Always call OUPS before you dig 811 or 800-362-2764. Once the excavation is approved and OUPS marks utilities; then we could have someone dig a trench to drain some of the storm water and route it away from the playground. As you can see in the pictures, all their mulch (which helps protect our children) is washing off the playground and into the grass. There is about 3 foot of mulch past the landscaping timbers.

Another idea of Mrs. Arnott’s class was to install a rain barrel to collect roof runoff and recycle this water for the flowerbeds that her class has planted. The flowerbeds look great and this creates less work for the maintenance crew. We hope that the slip on the corner of the playground will be fixed by installing the rain barrel as well.

Vinton Elementary students also placed soft path landscaping turf down to attempt to slow the velocity of the storm water runoff. It is great to see the creative minds at work. The pictures below show the difference one decision can make. Look how much grass is established and the hole is covered up and not as dangerous as before. The soil didn’t erode as bad on this spot as it did where the bare spots were.

The class also installed a bag that expands off the gutter when a high precipitation event occurs to push the water away from the sidewalk. As you can see in this picture, the water is eroding the soil under the sidewalk. They attempted to put soil and sow seeds around the hole but the water blew the bag off the gutter. We retightened the bag to see if it will hold during the next storm event. If you want to help with this project feel free to let us know.

Nick and Erica presented the streamulator demonstration so the students could see what might happen if the water keeps eroding the soil. The students and teachers loved this presentation because it was hands on and taught the students that we need to be good stewards of the Gallia County’s soil and water resources. Please do your part in helping our watersheds (streams, creeks, river, etc.) stay clean. You can make a difference!

COLUMBUS—State Representative Ryan Smith (R-Bidwell) has announced that the House Higher Education Study Committee will be holding a regional hearing at Rio Grande University and Rio Grande Community College on Wednesday, August 14th.

The hearing will focus specifically on higher education pathways, including transferability of credits, program accreditation, “stackable” certificates, adult education and gateway course reform.

“The study committee on higher education is an opportunity for local residents to weigh in on issues that are important to them and discuss their ideas with state legislators,” said Rep. Smith. “A competitive, high-quality education system is vital to ensure the success of our citizens as well as our economy.”

Rep. Smith currently serves on the Prescription Drug Addiction and Healthcare Reform Study Committee, which will be holding a local hearing in the 93rd House District on August 20th.

Fife is a graduate of Gallipolis Career College where she earned her medical administrative assistant diploma. Ravenswood, W.Va. (August 7, 2013) – On August 1st, Fruth Pharmacy held its annual golf tournament at Greenhills Country Club in Ravenswood, WV.

For 22 years, the golf tournament has been a tradition to help raise scholarship funds for deserving students at many local universities. Several scholarships provide an opportunity for Fruth employees or their children to seek a college degree. Fruth Pharmacy also contributes to the national NACDS Scholarship Program which provides scholarships to pharmacy students. Overall, Fruth Pharmacy and the Fruth Family support over 25 scholarships.

Vendors from all over the country came to Ravenswood to participate. These vendors generously donated funds, prizes, and other items needed for the event.

“I try to never miss this golf tournament. This is one of my favorite tournaments to attend and it’s for a good cause,” stated Ed Crouse of Preferred Mail Advertising.

Golf tournament participants are treated to breakfast, lunch on the course, a drive-thru ice-cream stand, dinner, silent auction, putting and chipping contests, and door prizes for every golfer. All participants also receive a goody bag.

“I enjoy seeing the students that our scholarships have helped, come out to participate. It’s good for the students to see how this event unfolds to raise money for their scholarships. It’s also great that our donors get the opportunity to meet and speak with our scholarship students,” Lynne Fruth, President and Chairman of the Board for Fruth Pharmacy commented.

Fruth scholarship winners participate during the day by helping out as needed with the various contests, delivery of drink and food items, taking photos and more, during the tournament.

Scholarship winners came out to assist during the tournament. Each winner was given a goody bag, copy of “A Journey of Giving” by Angie Johnson, and a Fruth polo shirt as a “thank you” for their help throughout the day.

RIO GRANDE, Ohio – Bullets rang out, victims were scattered about Wood Hall and law enforcement officers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, University of Rio Grande Police Department, Rio Grande Police Department, Gallia County Sheriff’s Office and Gallipolis Police Department worked together to control the scene Wednesday at the University of Rio Grande / Rio Grande Community College.

Or so it appeared.

The Bullets? Simunitions. Rounds designed for realistic and non-lethal force-on-force training.

The blood and injuries? Moulage kits. Hollywood-caliber makeup designed for casualty simulation.

The law enforcement officers? Real. Participants in an 8-hour Active Shooter Training put on by Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Special Response Team.

“You can study all the tactical training you want, but until you actually experience it live you just don’t know,” SRT Sergeant Brandon Cruz said. “When the adrenaline is flowing, bullets are flying, you see bodies on the ground and your heart rate goes up, it becomes a totally different experience.

“The main purpose is to give the local law enforcement who would be the first responders the tactics and training we have developed from the best practices nationally,” Cruz continued. “That way they can go back to their departments and train all their people; kind of a train the trainer type of class.”

Thursday’s Active Shooter Training included is one of four free programs the Ohio State Highway Patrol offers on request. They offer a 4-hour Direct to Threat, Building Security Assessment and a Field Training Exercise – an all-encompassing, multi-agency active shooter scenario.

Sgt. Cruz said the training programs first initiated after the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting that resulted in 33 deaths.

Such training is not new for Rio Grande, which has hosted similar exercises in the past.

“We’re always concerned about the safety of our students, faculty and staff, and what could happen because of what we’ve seen and read in various publications over the years,” Executive Vice President Paul Harrison said. “Hopefully we will never have an incident, but if we do have an active shooter we will be prepared to handle it properly because of training like this.”

The Active Shooter Training began at 8 a.m. in Bob Evans Farms Hall, where the law enforcement officers took in a PowerPoint presentation regarding tactical training and medical response. The rest of the morning included various classroom-style training sessions.

The afternoon’s activities began with staging at 1 p.m. that included makeup to turn 12 university faculty and staff members into life-like victims. The live scenarios that followed ranged from active shooter engagement in different locations with various obstacles to hostage situations.

“Active Shooter training is something you hope to never need, but you absolutely have to be prepared for any scenario,” URG Police Chief Scott Borden said. “I can’t thank the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Special Response Team enough. This training was fantastic. These tactics are tried and true from national experts, and it was a first class training from start to finish.”
